Genesee County is the home of Flint MI which has received a lot of bad press. As a retiree of the now gone; "mighty" Buick Motor Division Complex, I can testify that Flint and Genesee County have taken a lot of heavy blows, and, have faced and still face major challenges. But the richness of the auto industry left a legacy of architecture, cultural venues, skilled labor force, skilled engineering and management force, world class educational institutions, and economic affluence. There are signs of life and rebirth everywhere. Flint exists in its present location because it marks the southern most point of the Flint River. So it was the furthest south that Native Americans and early European settlers could go by canoe. As a result it became the natural crossing point for "The Grand Traverse," which ran past Joseph Smith's Trading Post which is believed to have been located near Grand Traverse Avenue and the Flint River in downtown Flint. "The Grand Traverse" ran between between Detroit to the Straits of Mackinaw. Flint and Genesee County are still a major East / West, and North / South cross roads.
