As I look back on high school not many highlights happened in math class, but that can't be said for all students. At East Kentwood High School, teacher Matt Wilcox, is making math not only memorable but fun. He has implemented effective ways to teach students math. For example, his advanced placement statistics class where he has been know to hand out packages of Skittles for students to analyze the colors to make sure what the company states on their website for the distribution of colored candies are, in fact, accurate. The students figure out the statics of each color and draw a conclusion from their findings. Wilcox is starting his 14th year in teaching and the numbers speak for themselves in his class last year 98% of his students passed the AP exam. In 2012, all 100% passed. That is absolutely stunning when you look at the national average of students passing the AP exam is at 54%. Wilcox is currently a deserving finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics and Science teaching. As a teacher, this is the highest award you can achieve in both subjects. One thing is for sure, Mr. Wilcox and Kentwood Public School teachers are leading the race to make high school education memorable!
