Gun Lake can satisfy almost anyone's lake needs! At over 2,600 acres and shaped like a butterfly, it has two halves so you cannot see the whole lake except from the air! Located mostly in Barry County, with the southwestern tip extending into Allegan County, there are four different townships represented.Swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, sailing, tubing, kayaking, and wakeboarding are some of the activities you will find on the lake because of its vast size. You can now even take a hydro flight!Fishing is very popular and you can find Bullhead, Crappie, Bluegill, Bowfish, Sunfish, Perch, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Rock Bass, Gar, and Walleye. There are numerous summer cottages, and permanent residences as well as shops and businesses dotting the roads around the lake. You can find rental cottages and resorts also. During the winter, ice shanty's dot the lake as fishermen claim their spots. Winterfest always has a lot going on. In the past, the lake has featured Gun Lake Idol, Winter Beard Derby, Polar Bear Plunge, a fishing contest, snowmobile races, and many other activities. You can grab a bite to eat at the many restaurants around the lake with varying price points. One breakfast place is Sandy's Lakeside Country Kitchen where you can get the "Big Breakfast" (it really is big!) for under $9.00. If you're on the other end of the lake, there's the Circle Inn which also serves homestyle breakfast and lunch. Between these is the Curly Cone that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and as the name implies, a host of frozen treats as well as fudge, cookies, etc. There are several pizza places, both dine-in and carry out. If you're looking for dinner the Sand Bar offers a nice rounded menu (I like the kabobs) and the Terrace Grille at the Bay Pointe Inn offers more elegant dining with an ever-changing menu. Freda's Fish Fry, The Gun Lake Pub, and Tex-Mex Express and Chophouse round out our dining choices.The Yankee Springs State Park offers camping, pavilions for picnicking, two swimming beaches, and a public boat launch. There are also miles of trails for those wanting to take a quick hike, do some mountain biking, or take a leisurely horseback ride. The park is also the site of the 4th of July fireworks and many take their boats out to watch them. Some even deck out their boats with lights and parade around the lake after the show. With the varying types of housing, lakefront, channel frontage, lake access, and condos you will find homes priced anywhere from $100,000 to $1,250,000. The average price of homes on Gun Lake ran $402,848 (GRAR sold stats for all of 2020). The channels and condos offer more affordable pricing so there really is something for everyone. Located between Grand Rapids to the north and Kalamazoo to the south you can have resort living yet have access to excellent job markets, an international airport, and all that the big city has to offer.
