Many towns have volunteers willing to hand out sports drink and bananas for a Fun Run on a sunny Sunday in August, but my town is over the top with volunteer spirit. This past weekend was the 25th running of the UP 200 Sled Dog Championship, a 250 mile race along the south shore of Lake Superior from downtown Marquette to Grand Marais and back. 14 mushers with their teams of 12 dogs endured some of the toughest blizzard conditions in the race history this past weekend, but so did the volunteers.

Staged at each road crossing, or area that could present risk, these folks stood outside in sub-zero temperatures with winds gusting at times to over 40 mph to insure the safety of the teams. Some may not have even witnessed a team passing through their crossing, but they were there just in case. Even more impressive, these hearty folks took shifts on this trail through the day and night. One more reason I love where I live. Thank you so "mush" to that army of helpers. This event would never be possible without you.
