What do you do when you get over a foot of snow?

Need a little nature and some fantastic walking/running trails? At the corner of McClement and Kellogg, you will find Fillmore Park. In 2006, this piece of land was donated by Raymond Fillmore. What a grand gesture! There is a lot of wildlife including deer, turkey, pheasant, and of course plenty of bunnies, squirrels, opossums, and the like. Fillmore Park also has ball fields and a restroom. What a great place to walk the dogs or bring the kids to get out and enjoy nature!

Downtown Brighton has some of the best locally-owned shops! There's nothing like being able to walk in and feel at home. I love to support local businesses, and they love to help and make you feel welcome. My visits to The Natural View Market, Hush Intimate Apparel, Brewery Becker, The Pound, Ciao Amicies, and The Tridge are some of my favorites. I could go on. Did you know that a Tridge is a three-way bridge? It is also a great place to hold a small wedding.

Just 15 miles north of Ann Arbor, Brighton is located in the southeast portion of Livingston County. The city has a fast-growing population of over 9,000 and an established business community. My cottage is just a short drive from Brighton. I enjoy its vibrant downtown with many restaurants and entertainment venues. Everything is walkable, safe, and has free parking!. With beautiful lakes, natural wetlands, and golf courses, Brighton offers recreation and social activities for residents and visitors. Brighton is a great location for families and professionals commuting to the northern Detroit suburbs. When I think of Brighton I see high-end amenities with a hometown charm.

I enjoyed an interesting surprise recently. While eating dinner one evening in downtown Brighton...low and behold, I looked up and saw our RE/MAX Balloon go floating by. I guess we are everywhere!

The Farmer's Market is now open on Saturdays in downtown Brighton. You will find crafts, flowers, handmade soaps, baked goods and of course, in-season fresh fruits and vegetables. Come back every week as selections will vary as more produce comes in. The Farmers' Market will be ongoing until October and open on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. To get there take Grand River Avenue, head west on Main Street and turn right on 1st Street. You can then follow Center Street around for free parking spaces.

Ladies Night Out will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015 in downtown Brighton, from 5:00-10:00 pm. Shop, dine and enjoy activities. This is always a popular event that is just in time for Mother's Day too! Downtown Brighton is located at Grand River Avenue and Main Street near I-96. If you are traveling from out of town, the following hotels in Brighton have specials for Ladies Night Out: Homewood Suites, Holiday Inn Express and Courtyard by Marriott.

The 2015 FREE Children's Spring Film Festival has now been announced. The following movies are free for kids 12 and under at the MJR Movie Theatre in Brighton. Only $1 per ticket, ages 13+. All of these movies are rated PG. These get filled up quick so allow plenty of time!

March 14 - 15: the movie Annie will be playing. I remember this received good reviews.

March 21 - 22: Night at the Museum - Secret of the Tomb. I saw this with my son and he really enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty funny too. It was nostalgic to see Robin Williams in it.

March 28 - 29: The Book of Life which is an animated film with the voices of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana and Channing Tatum.

The MJR Movie Theatre is located at 8200 Murphy Drive in Brighton, behind Home Depot. If you are taking I-96, you should get off at exit 145 (Grand River Avenue). The movie theatre is located in the Brighton Town Square Shopping Center.

I have always found this movie theatre clean, the popcorn fresh and tasty and the employees very professional and friendly. Don't forget to ask for your free refill on drinks and popcorn. If you a regular movie goer, I encourage you to sign up for their Rewards program where you can earn free popcorn, drinks and even free movie tickets.

I love to go hiking at Brighton Rec State Park. There are two hiking trails in the woods - one is the yellow trail ("Kahchin") that is approximately 2 miles long and the longer blue trail that is about 6 miles long. You will find it very peaceful and usually not that crowded. There are some hills but very do-able. You will get a good workout. Bikes are not allowed on these trails. There is the "Torn Shirt Trail" for mountain bikers and is challenging. Torn Shirt is over 5 miles long.

Brighton Rec is located off Bishop Lake Road; east of Chilson Road, south of Brighton Road and west of Bauer Road. I recommend taking Chilson Road to Bishop Lake Road as Bishop Lake Road is a dirt road and very bumpy. The park is closer to Chilson Road than Bauer. Brighton Rec is convenient to Pinckney, Hamburg Twp, Howell , Genoa Twp, Brighton and points beyond. I encourage you to get outside and visit Brighton Rec!

Kids may want to try the Naz Skate Park in Brighton, which is an indoor skateboarding park located behind the Brighton Nazarene Church. It is off of Brighton Road, east of Bauer Road and west of downtown Brighton. It is almost across from Brighton High School. Their address is 7669 Brighton Road, Brighton MI 48116.

I love that admission is free for the week if kids attend one of their SK8 churches on Saturday.
I also appreciate that they have different hours on Saturday based on the grade of the child so that the high schoolers are not skateboarding with the younger kids on Saturdays. The younger kids go in the morning; the middle school kids from 12:00 - 3:30 pm and the high school kids after that. On Thursdays, they have all ages from 4:00 - 8:00 pm and Fridays from 4:00 - 10:00 pm. Don't forget to complete an annual waiver for your child!

They have a lot of ramps there and also allow scooters inside the Naz Skate Park. Helmets are required (which as a mother I appreciate). Helmets are available for rent also. Kids can buy food and drinks while there such as pizza and slushie drinks. Don't be concerned if your child comes out of there with blue lips!

They have games kids can play if they need a break from skateboarding like ping pong, video games and more. They promote a drug-free environment. This is a great way for your child to make new friends!

If you are looking for a fun trip, Mt. Brighton is just a short drive away from many southeastern Michigan cities. It's a fun place for a date or a weekend family getaway. They also offer season passes as well as lessons, night skiing, racing, and even special events. There are also restaurants, shops and other attractions nearby to explore. No snow on the ground to enjoy? Mt. Brighton has snow-making capabilities that allow for a longer and more fun-filled ski season!

A beautiful spot for families and family activities is the mill pond walk in downtown. Tonight the Livingston County Concert Band wowed the audience with concert arrangements and marches! This group of approximately 50 musicians are all volunteers from the area who work or are enjoying retirement. In the summer college and high school students join in as well. Brighton: a family place to be!

June 6-7, The Livingston Players continues its History Alive series with the presentation of "An Evening With Mary Todd Lincoln", 7:30 p.m. at the City of Brighton Arts, Culture and History Center, 202 W. Main St. in Brighton. Listen to the historical icon as she reflects on stories of her childhood, courtship with Mr. Lincoln and life in the White House. Hear her own accounts of her life from before and after the assassination of her beloved husband. Tickets are $5 at the the CoBACH, at the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce, or at the door. The Brighton blood drive runs from 12:00-5:45 p.m., Friday at Hartland Insurance Agency, 2532 N. Old U.S. 23 in Hartland Township.
The American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region is calling on all eligible individuals to make an appointment to donate blood this week. Anyone 16 and older can donate as long as he or she is in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds. High school students must meet different height-and-weight requirements.

Brighton Bar and Grill is located right on Main Street, downtown Brighton. Shop around in your favorite stores, then have lunch or dinner or just a cocktail. Great food from burgers to Italian style dishes. There are lots of other areas to explore in downtown Brighton located west of US 23/I 96 and south of M 59.

Once you walk into the Ice House, you know there is some serious hockey going on here. Walking through the lobby you will hear not only English being spoken, but French and Russian as well. Players come from all over the United States, Canada and Russia to play in tournaments here. The Ice House also offers lessons and leagues for all ages and levels.

If you plan on sitting by the rink, bring a jacket! You can warm up with a drink in the restaurant at the top of the stairs. You won't miss any of the game because there are seats that overlook the three rinks below. On your way out, you can do some hockey shopping at the store in the lobby.

I am proud to be a part of this community. Brighton High School has ranked # 5 in the State this past year academically. In addition to academics, we have so much more to offer. The Center of Performing Arts sold out this winter with the production of Grease. Sports draws the community out with the brand new football field an amazing Pom team.

FREE PANCAKES! The local IHOPs gave away free pancakes one evening in March to help raise awareness and funds for Children's Miracle Network at Beaumont Children's Hospital!

The Tim Sova Team contributes a portion of our proceeds from each closing we have throughout the year to the amazing cause. Last year we helped purchase a high tech crib that is so needed to help the babies.

Island Lake Recreation Area is a great area for picnics, swimming, family gatherings, birthdays, reunions, hiking, biking, and more! It is a scenic park next to the Huron River and has around 4,000 acres. Visit the link below for information on more amenities.

One great aspect of living in Brighton for the kids are the sports. There are many options to choose from to get an idea of what they enjoy. Selcra organizaion has eight-week sports programs to get kids involved in team sports such as soccer, t-ball, flag football and community education after school programs. The Legacy center is brand new to Brighton. It is the premier indoor and outdoor athletic and recreational facility, catering to all ages. Kicks and Sticks in Howell provides an indoor turf field for soccer, flagfootball and Lacross. There is also the Sports teams at the schools. Starting in 7th grade Brighton Area Schools has top notch programs. A great way to get involved in the communtiy.

This is a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association. The 4th Annual Brighton Mom Prom on May 2nd is absolutely the most fun ladies night out you will find in Livingston county! Grab your girlfriends, put on an old bridesmaid dress or prom dress and come dance the night away under the disco ball! Not just for moms, all ladies 21 and up welcome!
