Recently, Northwest Michigan was hammered with a storm that left many of us with uprooted trees in our yards, or strewn across our roads and tangled up in our power lines. Maybe you saw a photo on the news of a shelf cloud sitting in a spooky green sky, or heard about the grapefruit-sized hail. The aftermath of that storm is just another reminder about why our community is more than resilient - it's remarkably compassionate. In Williamsburg, neighbors called each other to check that everyone was okay, and to let those who were out of town know about any damage. They took pictures of the fallen branches, got out chainsaws to clear the roads, and posted pictures of umbrellas and lawn furniture that had been flung from their owners' yards. They organized brush drop-offs, lent each other trailers, woodchippers, and pick-up trucks. Don't get me wrong, a lot of us still have work to do, but in the first moments after the skies cleared and we saw just what 90 mph winds can do to 70-year-old poplar trees, I was glad to be among friends and neighbors like these.
