For lovely hiking through the woods and over the dunes, as well as beautiful views from the overlook, visit Pyramid Point Trail in Sleeping Bear Dunes. To arrive at Pyramid Point Trailhead, follow M-22 to Port Oneida Road north and then east on Basch Road. Often the trailhead parking area is full; so biking in from the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail to Port Oneida Road and then Basch Road may be advisable. Many hikers head up the trail only as far as the overlook, take a few photos and hang up a hammock. Pyramid Point overlook offers awe-inspiring views of Lake Michigan, the Manitou Islands, and sometimes a Great Lakes freighter! The varying depths and shoals create beautiful shades of blues and greens in Lake Michigan. Hiking down the crazy steep dune to the water's edge is not advised for most! From the backside of the overlook and just a bit to the east, a trail heads down a narrow wooded path and emerges at the crest of a dune. Hikers can follow this dune trail or race down the dune into an enormous bowl and up the other side. After several ups and downs, you approach the shore. Beware; the distance is deceiving! From the tops of these dunes, the old Sugar Loaf Ski Hill can be seen inland in the distance to the east, and the town of Leland can be seen to the northeast on the shoreline. Once you wander back to the trail, there is a connecting loop that will lead you back to the main trail through the woods and to the parking area. Another trail can be found on the National Lakeshore website that takes hikers through a meadow and along Basch Road as well. Be safe! Enjoy and explore!
