East Kentwood Freshman Campus kicked off the first week of school with something new and exciting (a trademark of the Kentwood schools). The culture committee collaborated with the staff to treat the students to various activities throughout the week in keeping with their new mission statement to develop character qualities such as adaptability, integrity and perseverance in the students.

The East Kentwood Marching Band, the Varsity Voices, the Student Council, the Freshman Cheer Team and superintendent Mike Zoerhoff helped make the final event, an all Freshman pep assembly, a huge success! Students were given a boost by the staff who encouraged every student for the new school year. Activities like this one make it obvious that East Kentwood is like a family, and every student is given the opportunity to succeed!

Kentwood Public Schools shines again with its "Bike Camp" program, teaching individuals with Down Syndrome how to ride a bike! The KPS partnered with The Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan last week to teach this skill to participants with the goal of them expanding their independence and becoming lifelong riders.

What a gift and a joy to see the smiles on the riders' faces as they reached success! The excitement was amplified by a visit from NFL players Cameron, Bradfield, Reuben Riley, and David Harris who stopped by to check out the program and say hello. Thanks for another wonderful program, KPS.

East Kentwood High School's very own Mr. Luke Wilcox has been recognized as a finalist for the Michigan Teacher of the Year award! Wilcox, who teaches AP Statistics, is one of five finalists (statewide) for the award. This is a huge honor considering the number of exceptional teachers not just within the Kentwood school system but throughout the entire state. Congrats, Mr. Wilcox, and keep up the outstanding work!

EKHS alumni are representing EKHS in a variety of positive ways across the state! Two EKHS graduates participated in the Mrs. Michigan American Pageant held on March 28. Alumni Shaylett Long Stuckey came away as the crowned Mrs. Michigan, and Rachael Ruiz participated as the host of the event!

In the academic arena, alumna Kelsey Friberg, now a junior at Central Michigan University, has shown brightly through her passion for social work with a focus on human trafficking awareness and reform. In her quest for awareness and her achievements in a variety of related clubs and associations, Friberg has been named the United Way Volunteer of the Year for Isabella County Kelsey and has been nominated by CMU for the prestigious Truman Scholarship. The scholarship was founded in 1975 as a way to recognize juniors who show leadership in and commitment to careers in public service. A huge congrats to Kelsey for her award and nomination and best of wishes as your work toward the greater good!

Last month a group of 115 girls from various Kentwood elementary schools were invited to East Kentwood High School to visit various STEM classes (science, technology, engineering, math) the school offers. This girls-only program is designed to teach the students about education and career opportunities in typically male-dominated fields.

During their visit to EKHS, the girls helped with science experiments, learned about dissecting animal specimens, interacted with live reptiles and birds - all of which served to excite them about the opportunities that lie ahead for them for their futures at EKHS and beyond! This visit was a follow up to a similar visit last October that highlighted the achievements of female scientists, engineers, mathematicians and programmers. This is a great way to encourage the younger students, help dispel any anxiety they have about entering high school, and spark interest in STEM careers. Programs like this are just part of what sets Kentwood Public Schools apart. Good work, Kentwood!

Congrats to ten Advanced Placement United States History (APUSH) students from East Kentwood High School for their participation in the prestigious History Day Regional Competition held at GVSU. The students were judged by college professors and students on their historical research projects concerning "Leadership & Legacy." Eight of the ten APUSH students won their division and will compete at the State Competition on April 25 at Dewitt High School.

This is EKHS's second year participating in this competition with four students competing last year - one of which went all the way to the national competition in Washington DC. This year's national competition will be held in June at the University of Maryland. Putting your work on display to be judged by others takes courage and it's great to see the hard work, time, and energy these students are putting in to their scholarly work! Keep it up, students of Kentwood!

A grant from the Kentwood Foundation recently brought new microscopic opportunities to life for biology students at East Kentwood High School. "The Brine Shrimp Hatching Project" used the grant for technology, allowing students to take photos and video from their phones to share and use in their study. The images and videos provided a whole new way for students to study the microenvironment of the hatching shrimp, employ the scientific method, and then analyze the statistics to conclude how conditions in the surrounding environment change the hatching rate of the shrimp.

The first "Fathers Bring Your Child to School" event for Kentwood Public middle schools was a huge success with over 550 fathers and male role models participating! Each school hosted breakfast for the students and dads along with a guest speaker who gave a personal testimony about the way their positive role model impacted their lives as children. The principals of each school also took the time to speak for a few moments, encouraging the fathers in their involvement and interest in their children's education and school activities.

Kentwood Public Schools hopes to bring this special occasion back to the middle schools again next year, with special thanks to Aaron Bailey (Behavior Specialist at Pinewood) and Lawrence Young (para professional at Challenger) for coordinating this year's event!

Congratulations to two Kentwood students on their participation in the Greater Grand Rapids Regional Spelling Bee! The bee was held at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum on March 10. Eighth grade student Larry Goto and fourth grader Aditiya Garud competed against 20 other participants for the opportunity to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held in Washington, DC.

Larry stood out from the other contestants by exhibiting courtesy and respect to those he was competing against, going out of his way to be helpful and encouraging to them during intermission. Aditiya was one of only four participants from the fourth grade to compete at this impressive level! I expect we'll see Adititya in this competition again in the years to come. The champion of the competition, eighth grader Lily Mears from Lakeshore Middle School, will compete as speller #117 at the 2015 national spelling bee on May 27-28. Watch the competition LIVE on ESPN!

Don't miss the East Kentwood Fine Arts Department spring musical, Cats! Tickets are on sale now ($10 at the EKHS switchboard and at the box office on performance nights) for the March 19-21 and March 27-28 shows, all starting at 7:30 pm at the Kentwood Fine Arts Auditorium. According to director Scott Mellama, "'Cats' is a rare production opportunity...it is the kind of show that you can only strive for when the timing and talent are just right for it."

"Cats" isn't the first challenging production EKHS has put on. In an effort to provide diverse and complex pieces for the students, the department has also produced "Guys and Dolls", "The Wiz", "Hairspray", and even the formidable "Sweeney Todd". Come out to this spring's production of "Cats" and celebrate EKHS's student collaboration of talent!

Kentwood Public School students braved the cold wintry blast this past Monday as they gathered together to make care packages for our troops. This tradition started because of one of East Kentwood's own, Navy Seal David Warsen. After graduation, he enlisted in March of 2009 and was transferred to California to join a West Coast Seals team in October of 2010. Two months after arriving he joined the conflict in Afghanistan. The East Kentwood graduate died in that conflict in 2012 when his black-hawk helicopter went down. For the past three years, students have kept Warsen's memory and service to our country alive as they build care packages for our troops.

There were 153 care packages created in 4 hours on Monday. Some of the items collected by students for these care packages were wool socks, blankets, baked goods, iTune gift cards, candy and Buffalo Wild Wings sauces. What a great way to celebrate one of East Kentwood's own and all our veterans this November. Thanks to all the East Kentwood students for showing their hearts and Falcon Pride.

As I look back on high school not many highlights happened in math class, but that can't be said for all students. At East Kentwood High School, teacher Matt Wilcox, is making math not only memorable but fun. He has implemented effective ways to teach students math.

For example, his advanced placement statistics class where he has been know to hand out packages of Skittles for students to analyze the colors to make sure what the company states on their website for the distribution of colored candies are, in fact, accurate. The students figure out the statics of each color and draw a conclusion from their findings.

Wilcox is starting his 14th year in teaching and the numbers speak for themselves in his class last year 98% of his students passed the AP exam. In 2012, all 100% passed. That is absolutely stunning when you look at the national average of students passing the AP exam is at 54%.

Wilcox is currently a deserving finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in mathematics and Science teaching. As a teacher, this is the highest award you can achieve in both subjects. One thing is for sure, Mr. Wilcox and Kentwood Public School teachers are leading the race to make high school education memorable!

What a shock it was for Kentwood residents to find out that a force 1 tornado had touched down right in their neighborhood Sunday night and caused millions of dollars in damage. Kentwood Public Schools showed their strong character as middle school students, high school football players, families and staff joined in to help clean up limbs and debris. The Falcons showed they once again will soar no matter what the weather brings! How exciting it is to live in a place where the learning goes beyond the classroom and into the community.

I had the opportunity to attend Kentwood Public School District as a student and am very excited about the passion and the vision their current superintendent Michael Zoerhoff has for the district. Kentwood School District's population is represented by over 70 different countries and 60 different languages spoken; diversity is not an idea here but a lovely reality! You will feel right at home in Kentwood Public School district, no matter if you're moving from across the city, state, country, or world.
