Oakley Area Insight

  • I am the secretary of the Oakley Bike Run Association (OBRA). We are a non-profit, 501.3C organization federally recognized. This is our 16th year hosting the annual Oakley Bike Run (during the second week of September) - a charity run with 100% of our monies given back to local families and individuals in need. This past Christmas, 46 people were delivered Christmas gifts and food baskets, including household basics on behalf of OBRA. Our members are real estate agents, engineers, business owners, chefs, truck drivers, machinists, lumber yard supervisors, hospital executives, mechanics, mothers, fathers and more. We are a very eclectic group of local people. We love where we live, love the people of our community and want to be part of an organization that is bigger than the individual. What do I love about OBRA? The people I have met who have become dear friends. Without this organization, I would not have had the opportunity to meet these folks, break bread with them and grow and learn as an individual.
  • Back in 1842, the area now known as Oakley was called Mickleville. A man by the name of Phillip Mickle owned a tavern in the area and became the first postmaster back in 1852. In 1860, the post office moved to Havana - which was in the area where the original Parshallburg Bridge once stood. The Village of Oakley was platted by Andrew Huggins in 1868 and the post office was then again moved. The Village of Oakley was named after Judge Oakley of Dutchess County, NY who was a relative of a local in the area at that time. In 1887, Oakley was officially incorporated as a village.

In 1880, Oakley had a population of 350, one school, two grocery stores, two drug stores, two hardware stores and three dry-goods stores. At present, the Village of Oakley has a population of approximately 300 residents with two taverns, one restaurant, four churches, a convenience store/gas station and two grain elevators. The local favorite place for dinner and drinks is The Family Tavern. Family owned and operated for 31 years by three generations!
