In east central Cass County is a village called Vandalia that sits in the southeast part of Penn Township, Michigan near the Indiana border. The village is small and covers less than a square mile and the township is around 35 square miles.

The township has quite a few lakes: Birch Lake 300 acres, Donnell Lake 246 acres, Paradise Lake 185 acres, Kirk Lake 41 acres, Belas Lake 30 acres, Buck Lake 23 acres, Lewis Lake 21 acres, Elbow Lake 10 acres, and Lime Lake 9 acres.

This area has a proud history of being a large part of the Underground Railroad. Every July they host "Underground Railroad Days" all with the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County. Milo E Barnes Park is a four acre village park that has a state historical marker for the Underground Railroad. The park also has a great playground.
