Recently, Northwest Michigan was hammered with a storm that left many of us with uprooted trees in our yards, or strewn across our roads and tangled up in our power lines. Maybe you saw a photo on the news of a shelf cloud sitting in a spooky green sky, or heard about the grapefruit-sized hail.

The aftermath of that storm is just another reminder about why our community is more than resilient - it's remarkably compassionate. In Williamsburg, neighbors called each other to check that everyone was okay, and to let those who were out of town know about any damage. They took pictures of the fallen branches, got out chainsaws to clear the roads, and posted pictures of umbrellas and lawn furniture that had been flung from their owners' yards.

They organized brush drop-offs, lent each other trailers, woodchippers, and pick-up trucks. Don't get me wrong, a lot of us still have work to do, but in the first moments after the skies cleared and we saw just what 90 mph winds can do to 70-year-old poplar trees, I was glad to be among friends and neighbors like these.

I know a lot of people have experienced "The Nod" walking in quiet neighborhoods, or along cobblestone streets with shops lined on either side. In Williamsburg, I promise it's a whole different experience.

There are places in Williamsburg where you'll meet the eyes of another weary mushroom hunter and share The Nod. Along the winding paths of Sand Lakes Quiet Area, you'll see another traveler snow-shoeing, cross-country skiing, or hiking - another Nod. You'll find yourself following historical trails where the old railroad tracks used to run looking for geocaches and see a knowing smile and yet another Nod.

It'll happen when you least expect it, too, and that's one of the reasons I love Williamsburg. You could be raking leaves, or blowing snow, or setting up your sprinklers. Maybe you're stopping at the corner market to top off the boat on your way to the lake, or just dropping a letter off at the post office. Whether you're walking the dog, pushing a stroller, limbering up for a jog, or spreading a towel at the beach, if you happen to spot another living human being, I can almost guarantee you'll get The Nod.

The reason for this phenomenon is simple; everywhere you go in Williamsburg, you're part of a place where we appreciate the little things and are happy to see others doing the same. It's a neighborly feeling that extends past the driveways and mailboxes all the way out to the lakes and trails. That's what The Nod is all about.
