TCAPS (Traverse City Area Public Schools) is one of the largest school systems in Michigan covering 300 miles and serving 10,000 students. Impressive? Yes, but as a parent here, I was concerned that my son might "slip through the cracks" in a great big high school.Sure, there's Class A athletics and the community and boosters are very enthusiastic and supportive of their teams. There's an impressive stadium and so very many sports - from downhill skiing, to baseball, to football, basketball, and everything in between. But only so many kids will make the school team. How do the rest get a chance to shine? I was happy to find there are many ways...I was impressed with TCAPS award-winning music and theater programs. Hundreds of students enjoy the performing arts and the extra-curricular activities that go along with them. Choirs range from 10 to 100. A single theater production can organize more than 80 kids into a team that works together using many talents. TCAPS also has Montessori and International programs. There are cultural exchange programs, robotics, an online academy, and dual enrollment in college. This is just to name a few of the diverse offerings for students. Families in the three northern Michigan counties served by TCAPS benefit from the small town atmosphere and values without sacrificing high quality education.
