When walking/biking/running the Tart Trail in Traverse City, take a minute to stop on the bridge that crosses the Boardman Lake. It is shallow, clear to the bottom, and connects Historical Downtown Traverse City's west side to the slightly more peaceful east side. Just over the bridge, to the east, is the Sailing Academy, Boardman Lake access, the beautiful public library, and the delicious Filling Station Brewery, among many other growing businesses. To the west, is health food store Oryana, Rare Bird Brewery, Old Towne Playhouse, and much more. Just one more reason why Traverse City is the best small town to live in!
  • Boardman neighborhood is a residential historic district bordering the east side of downtown Traverse City. The first home I owned and renovated in Traverse City was a 1920 craftsman in this neighborhood. It has a nice park and playground, F&M Park, in the center of the neighborhood. Oak Park Neighborhood adjoins Boardman on the east and the city/county Governmental Center sits at the far west end.

There are about 174 well-maintained wood-frame residences. Many are covered with clapboard siding. These range from elaborate houses built for many of the city's prominent late 19th-century residents to more simple homes owned by small businessmen and lumber company employees during the late 19th century. Today, it's a nice mix of families, singles, couples and folks from all income levels.

The neighborhood construction was brought about by the early lumber boom in Traverse City. Captain Henry Boardman, one of the earliest notables, had a home constructed here. The neighborhood declined during the 1920's, and many of the larger houses were converted into apartments or rooming houses, or simply left vacant. However, revitalization starting in the 1970's renewed the single-family character of the neighborhood. Boardman neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
