If you are looking for something a little different in the area, and maybe for the older crowd (sorry kids!), you'll have to check out Bardic Wells Meadery and Fetch Brewing Company here in the White Lake area.

Bardic Wells Meadery is in Montague and first opened in 2007 after becoming Michigan's first licensed meadery. They exclusively sell mead, that has won two national awards, one of which being a Blue Ribbon, and they make them with honey from their own apiary! Be sure to come out and party like a bard on Fridays and Saturdays.

Now, there is also Fetch Brewing Company which is located on Colby St. in downtown Whitehall. They opened in 2012 and sell their own craft microbrews. Be sure to check them out, whether it's just for a beer or to also participate in one of the several events that they have going on, including open mic nights, crafts nights, live entertainment, or their running or cycling groups.

If you're ready to dive into some local White Lake area history there are three places that you will have to visit. The first must-see place is located in Montague and, fittingly, is the Montague Museum. This museum features local area artifacts including logging era artifacts and other items unique to local area history, like a dress worn by Montague's own Nancy Ann Fleming, who was crowned Miss America in 1961. The other two places are located over the bridge in Whitehall by the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and are the C&O Railroad Caboose Museum and Dr. Meinhardi's Apothecary Shop. The Caboose Museum is an actual railroad caboose that was renovated into a museum and features artifacts from the railroad history of Montague and Whitehall. Dr. Meinhardi's Apothecary Shop is a restored 1900s Whitehall doctor's office and apothecary shop. It features a medicinal herb garden and displays artifacts that you would have found in a turn of the century doctor's office.

Make sure you check out these neat little spots in the White Lake Area featuring our unique local history.

During the Christmas season, it seems there isn't a moment in neither Whitehall nor Montague to spare! People from the shore to the edge of the woods gather together and prepare for the upcoming holiday season. The choirs and bands from the local high schools can be heard nearly every weekend, caroling, and spreading holiday cheer around White Lake. No matter where you go, you can feel the festive nature as the streets become lined with holiday lights, garland, and other decorations. It seems that the holidays touch everyone.

The famous Winter Sports Complex typically opens this time of year for those looking for somewhere for winter sporting. Everything from skiing, to sledding, ice skating to louging, hot cocoa drinking to carol singing, the Winter Sports Complex has it all. Overall, the White Lake area is truly a place where the holiday spirit can be felt on an individual level, and as a community together.

It's September now, which means two things for the students and families of the White Lake Area. A new school year, and the start of a new football season. With the end of September quickly approaching, so will the annual Homecoming football game and dance. This is an especially important game for Whitehall, not only because the tradition of Homecoming has arrived, but because it is also the annual Whitehall vs Montague game, a rivalry as old as time. This game is not just for the students, but also for the parents, and even grandparents of the students. Generations can bond by getting together, cheering on their team, and either remembering when they themselves were an eager student, or forming their own memories that they will treasure for years to come.

Upon seeing the White Lake area, including Whitehall and Montague, one might form several opinions. Those who are used to larger cities might note the small-town feeling that radiates from the various shops and family-owned restaurants that decorate the energetic Colby Street, or the ever beautiful shimmering White Lake in the distance that which the area was named for. However, what truly makes White Lake something special is the people.

If you look closely, you see people waving, neighbors greeting each other, children who will get the opportunity to spend their entire lives together playing in the park. It is a place where a friend is always a short distance away, and everything is intimate, yet comfortable. It is truly a unique place, and I hope anyone is who is looking for a place to call home will give the White Lake Area a try.
