Durand Union Station was designed by Spier and Rohms and originally built in 1903. Railroads have always played a major role in Durand's history and economy. It was said that a train stopped in Durand every 9 minutes and it was a local meeting place. Any train that came through Michigan had to go through Durand and was a very busy place.

This was a very busy station as the Grand Trunk Western and Ann Arbor Railroads crossed at grade there. During the early 1900s, the railroad industry was at its peak in the United States, 41 passenger trains, 24 mail trains, and 78 freight trains passed through Durand on a daily basis. Durand Union Station handled approximately 3,200 passengers per day, making it a huge prospering hub of the industry. The Historic Durand Union Station is now a top tourist attraction for Mid Michigan.

Passengers still walk the halls of the depot to board their train. The Amtrak Blue Water eastbound to Port Huron and westbound to Chicago make daily stops at the Durand Union Station and it serves as a State Railroad History Museum.
